Oundle Festival of Literature: Clare Hunter: Threads of Life: A History of the World Through the Eye of a Needle

This event is free to watch and is dedicated to all the people who picked up their scissors, got out their sewing kits and machines, and produced scrubs and related items, to support our NHS at the start of the Pandemic.

Threads of Life is Clare’s first book. It is a Sunday Times Bestseller, BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week, it was the winner of Saltire First Book Award and Waterstones Scottish Book of the Month.

Threads of Life is a chronicle of identity, protest, memory, power, and politics told through the stories of needlework and celebrates the age-old, universal, and underexplored beauty and power of sewing. It is an evocative and moving book about the need we have to tell our story. Clare Hunter has sewn since she was a child. She has been a banner-maker, community textile artist and textile curator for over twenty years and established the community enterprise NeedleWorks in Glasgow. She was also a recipient of a Creative Scotland Award in 2016.
She still undertakes textile commissions and organises community sewing projects in Scotland

Clare Hunter chronicles the stories of the men and women, over centuries and across continents, who have used the language of sewing to make their voices heard, even in the most desperate of circumstances.

‘A beautifully considered book… Clare Hunter has managed to mix the personal with the political with moving results. ‘Tracy Chevalier
